Oh, it was too good to be true. Still it was a good anomaly to find.

This reminds me of that scientific paper a few years ago announcing particles travelling faster than light...

Eu-football.info now allows sorting of players according to age of debut. Potential additions listed as is:

Dates of birth are given for Alexander Morten and Jack Henderson, though ultimately a source seems untraceable.

Some of these oldest débutants would naturally (if verified) join the oldest players list, but I'm yet to find a way to sort their database by age on final match.

EU-football gives following link. It says that the William Hamilton who was born on 09-12-1864 played 1 full cap for Ireland in 1885. So it seems EU-football's info is not very reliable.

Hmm, intriguing but sadly, wrong.  Just a case of two people with the same name.  The DOB belongs to a discus thrower, not the same guy who played vs Hungary.   The discus thrower died in January 1959 (see obituary in "Irish Independent"), but the footballer died in November 1970 aged 67 (see obituary in "Irish Times").

DOBs were given by IFFHS publications but it is thought that those were guessed/invented. See efforts here to trace a date the hard way.

Is anybody in regular contact with the admin?  Probably we can just ask for the filters we want - it seems they have borrowed plenty from us, so why not.   Same for NFT : ask them to turf out cases we've missed, and to flag up new cases automatically.

I still think he was more likely born in 1934, but lacking confirmation either way.  Let's add him to the unconfirmed list.

> Rudolf Donhardt        Austria           15y 136d  24-Jan-1893       8-Jun-1908 (1-11 vs England)

Seems wrong.  Donhardt played 2 years earlier for Wien vs Berlin and apparently played 6 years earlier in a domestic match.

> Joseph Fischer         Luxembourg        15y 224d  24-Feb-1909       5-Oct-1924 (1-4 vs Belgium*)

Seems no problem with this case, will be added.

> Jaroslav Jirkovský     Bohemia           15y 356d  15-Oct-1891       6-Oct-1907 (5-3 vs Hungary)

Hmm, various DOBs online. He was more known as an ice hockey player but its the same guy in both sports.   DOB also given as 8-9-1891, and 8-3-1891 here; in either case he would be too old for our list.   The 15-Oct date is given by the Czech FA website which in turn seems to derive from Jerabek's book, although I note that the original edition of that didn't give DOBs.  Will add to unconfirmed.

> Look at this one: Gleofilo Hasselbaink of Suriname.

Good find.  Again perhaps somebody can ask NFT to flag these up automatically for us.  The benefit for them is that adding an young/old age detector will likely flag up various errors/inconsistencies in their own data too.

Another interesting thing about this is that the eu-football  list apparently does not compute the player's age automatically from his DOB, since Bermingham is listed as age 48 (meaning born 1886) but with DOB in 1896 instead, without the age being "corrected" to 38.  Strange.

Anyway, the discus thrower's DOB was clearly not in 1896, given that his obituary said he joined the police in 1907.  So it looks like not only the wrong identity was used to provide the footballer's DOB, but then this was also fudged to 1896 later as somebody realised that 48 was an unrealistic age....   two wrongs don't make a right.smiley: sick

A big 3-player mixup.  The correct situation should be:
Willoughby James Hamilton   9-Dec-1864    1 cap in 1885
William Drummond Hamilton   4-May-1859    1 cap in 1885
 R. William J. Hamilton      DOB unknown   1 cap in 1908

> Martinho Oliveira      Portugal          39y 358d   9-Apr-1888       1-Apr-1928 (0-0 vs Argentina)

Seems a simple typo.  DOB more often given as 9-Apr-1898.  Pictures of him suggest a younger man, for what it's worth.

> Ernest Arend           Luxembourg        40y 187d   6-Aug-1889       9-Feb-1930 (0-1 vs Belgium*)
> Jean Weimerskirch      Luxembourg        38y 180d  19-Jul-1883      15-Jan-1922 (3-2 vs France*)
> Jean Wagner            Luxembourg        37y 314d   3-Dec-1969      13-Oct-2007 (1-0 vs Belarus)
> György Szabó           Hungary           37y 185d  24-Apr-1942      26-Oct-1979 (0-2 vs United States)

Seems no obvious problem with these, will add.

I also noticed Vincent Thill (Luxembourg) born 4-Feb-2000, scored aged 16y 117d on his 2nd cap on 31-May-2016 (1-3 vs Nigeria).
He seems to be the first (male) player born 2000+ to score in an international match, though it's quite possible we missed one recently.
Both his parents Serge and Nathalie Thill played for Luxembourg (Nathalie is in our list as one of the oldest female players) and his brother Sébastien is also an internationalist - just the other brother Olivier (U21 international) is missing for a full house :-)

A few players who have taken part in their national teams' most recent match (so they may climb higher still)

Selva's scoring record for San Marino never ceases to amaze me. How many shots or chances did he have? One per game?

Kilifi Uele is an interesting one. He is/was the technical director of the Tongan FA; clearly he preaches by example... He also coached the team in the 2010 WCQ, and first played WCQ in November 1996 [spelling also given as Kilifi Vele]. Plausible that he could have been in the 1993 or 1994 Tonga squads. I checked my Vanuatu and Fiji newspaper scans for 93 but didn't see his name mentioned... though those were hardly thorough sources.

Just a curious note which doesn't concern our list, but which does deserve to be mentioned in my opinion.
Annuario del Calcio Mondiale 1995/96 gives the goalscorers of the 1994/95 Asian Champions' Cup semifinal between Al-Arabi and Ilhwa Chunma. The first goalscorer for Al-Arabi is indicated as Marco Antônio (penalty) at 23'. I've investigated a little and I've discovered that Marco Antônio was almost surely this Brazilian player, world champion in 1970, whose date of birth is February 6, 1951. This means, when he scored that goal, he was almost 44 years old!! And this occurred in a quite important match: a continental semi-final.

A new entry into the Men - Youngest Goal-scorers, from the 2016 AFF Championship qualifiers.
21/10/2016 Cambodia 3-2 East Timor
Nelson Sarmento Viegas
scored one goal for East Timor. His date of birth is 24/12/1999, so he scored his first goal aged 16y, 302d.

I'm investigating the true date of birth of this Nepalese talent: Bimal Gharti Magar. I'm more and more certain there was an age cheat or something and his true d.o.b. might be 14 September 1997.
The older versions of his Wikipedia biography reported this date, and the guy himself, on his official Facebook profile, said his birthday was in September. But more recently, magically, the d.o.b. changed and became 26 January 1998, not only on Wikipedia, but also on his Facebook profile.
Other online sources have my same doubt...

I think you are certainly right about Magar, there is enough good evidence to confirm a true birthday in Sep 1997. It changes his place only slightly in both youngest player and scorer lists.

So far I have tried to avoid writing "age cheat" anywhere in the file - I will write something like "his true date of birth is X but his official date of birth is given as Y".

It would be nice to check out some of the Burma players with highly suspicious ages, but I think this is beyond us.

That's why I'm beginning to learn some keywords in Burmese: date of birth = မွေးရက် ; age = အသက်အရွယ် ; football = ဘောလုံး ; player = ကစားသူ ; young = လူငယ် ; cheat = လိမ်လည်

Your Italian-Myanma phrase book is more comprehensive than I expected. What is the Burmese (or Italian) for the phrase "my hovercraft is full of eels" ?

Unexpectedly the Italian translation for "eel" is "anguilla", so I fear I have to begin searching for the eventual age cheats in the various Anguilla national football squads...

Another for the young scorers list

   Cheung Chi-Wai                Taiwan            16y  83d     6-May-1946    28-Jul-1962 (4-0 vs Singapore)                [ 5]

[ 5]. The opponent was All-Singapore (including British servicemen).  Cheung also scored on 18-Aug-1962 (5-0 vs Sarawak) aged 16y 104d.

He may also have scored in the 1-1 draw vs South Vietnam on 14-Jul-1962.  He did score in the 3-1 defeat to Saigon All-Stars on 8-Jul-1962 but I haven't counted that game, although the "Saigon All-Stars" was generally just a relabelled national team.
