What about the national teams on that are 'on tour' so to speak? In earlier years with travel limitations I can't imagine too many squads being brought along that would be large enough to pull off a rotation system...

There were serious plans for a trip of Dutch NT in the 1929 Summer to make a 3 months tour to Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and Dutch FA already asked players if they were able to make this trip already in September 1928 as you can read here. After the severe 1929 Winter this trip was cancelled as the Dutch championships were far behind schedule.

Yes usually about 18 players or fewer.  For the Asian cases mentioned above, one caveat is that matches were less than 90 minutes in the early days.

And three games in just one day? In Europe, does the record belong only to Sweden?

In club football, Grêmio once played three times in the same day, all for the Gaúcho state championships. No player played in all three matches though:

11/12/1994 Grêmio 0-0 Aimoré
11/12/1994 Grêmio 4-3 Santa Cruz
11/12/1994 Grêmio 1-0 Brasil de Pelotas

All matches were at Grêmio's stradium (a "triple-header" then), attracting a grand total of 247 spectators.

Hehe... it could only happen in the "crazy" Brazilian football...

Again, the Brazilian midfielder Juninho Pernambucano, on September 7, 1999, played two games in two different countries. The first one was Brazil 4-2 Argentina, the second one was Nacional 3-0 Vasco da Gama in Montevideo, valid for the 1999 Copa Mercosur.

Soren Lerby played competive matches in two different countries on the same day. On 13-11-1985 in the afternoon in Dublin with Denmark a World Cupqualifying match against Ireland and in the evening with Bayern München for the DFB Pokal againstVfL Bochum as you can red here.
