It is pretty stupid. It would have been understandable if they only qualified as previous winners, but they had to go to a qualifying group. Wouldn't the effort be better spent on a genuine "emerging" nation?

These terms are almost meaningless. Who is to say what "developed" means? To have professional clubs with big stadiums and lots of TV money? Then there are some countries in Europe which are barely developed.

North Korea is consistently one of the best performers in Asia, perhaps THE best relative to its infrastructure and economy. Compare this to the performance of some of the Gulf nations, which have spent huge sums of money since the 1970s to "develop" their game with foreign coaches and pseudo-naturalized imports. And they still can't defend a simple cross or long-ball through the middle.

I guess they are ranked as developing country since their structure is very far away from common standards. There are no sponsors, no common clubs, no international transfer system.

Indeed but FIFA or AFC are unlikely to develop North Korea's infrastructure or economic policy (unless they award them to host the 2026 World Cup). But in terms of national football team quality, North Korea is in the top rung of Asia, which should preclude it from this "developmental" tournament.

I think North Korea v Turkmenistan might be the final again. I hope Turkmenistan can qualify.

Group B is the group of death with three previous winners. Not to mention Philippines and their positive development.

Yes. Usually the hosts are seeded. This automatically gives them a better chance, as they can't be drawn against one of the top 2 teams (or 4 teams in the case of Euro 2012). It's not a good thing from a competitive point of view, but from a financial point of view, it makes perfect sense to give the host nation a good chance to go further in the competition.

The tournament has kicked off with wins for Turkmenistan and Palestine. Interesting to see FIFA has upgraded the status of matches to continental qualifiers!

Interesting - but as usual, completely inconsistent. If they've upgraded the status of this year's matches to continental qualifiers, how difficult would it have been to upgrade the previous matches in 2008 and 2010 to continental qualifiers?
