Were Afghanistan formal British protectorate ? They weren't shown in any old maps.

In WorldStatesMen, Oman were British protectorate. However, in rulers.org, Oman were informal protectorate.

Were Afghanistan informal (De facto) protectorate? Their protectorate status wasn't shown in old maps.

Yes Afghanistan was. About Oman, I don't know but this link has some more details. It seems that Oman was not officially a protectorate, but in reality it was.

in Gulf region, Kuwait,Bahrain,Qatar,UAE were British protectorates
why didn't they join Commonwealth of Nations?

You could say the same about Egypt, or Iraq. I guess these nations didn't feel a cultural tie to the former British Empire in the same way as some other countries did.
