Yesterday evening Eddy Merckx was special guest in the telecast "Dedicato a...". What a great personage sHa_clap2.gif
He isn't only the strongest cyclist ever, but he's also a very humble person. He still has a lot of good friends here in Italy, one of them is Felice Gimondi, his toughest rival in their roaring years.

I am not a big cycling fan, but Paris-Roubaix is my favorite course (probably because of the cobbled stones) followed by the Tour of Flanders. I remember very well the 1983 edition when my countryman Hennie Kuiper won after having a flat tire some kilometers before the finish.

I was a cycling fan......I try to watch the finish of the important classics, but I will not stay at home for them....I will for international football matches..

I've been a fan of cycling since the second half of the 1990s, mainly thanks to "The Pirate" Marco Pantani.
But I also remember with a bit of nostalgia the exciting duels between Lance Armstrong and Jan Ullrich at Tour de France. I hope Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck to come competitive again in the future, as they were protagonists of an exciting rivalry not long ago.
I must confess, anyway, that my passion towards this wonderful sport has faded a bit because of all the doping scandals.

I used to be a big fan of Joop Zoetmelk. Unfortunately for him after Eddy Merckx retired he had to cope with Bernard Hinault, another great cyclist. Zoetemelk finished the Tour de France 16 times (victory in 1980 and finished six times as second).

I an not a cycling fan, but I do cycle. Also, I almost included cycle polo on my site, except they have not held any international matches since about 2006...

Wow, an Italian cyclist has good chances to win the Tour de France this year!!
However, objectively, this is a low-profile edition, mainly because of Alberto Contador and Chris Froome's accidents.
Also spectacle hasn't been unforgettable so far, but this may not be a negative aspect: I remember, in the past, a lot of memorable editions that were stronlgy fixed by doping...

I do not agree it is a low profile edition; accidents are part of the tour, I think Nibali can be a worthy winner but let us hope there will be a challenger .... Nibali has won the Giro so he has proved something in the past....his palmares is better then Froome's

I'm not discussing Nibali's value and merits. He's a great talent and fully deserves the yellow jersey.
But Froome and Contador's accidents have conditioned the level of this Tour. Imagine a World Cup without Germany and Brazil.
Let's hope in a great battle in the Pyrenees stages. Above all, without accidents.

I would like to see a World Cup with only fake countries. It would be held in Sealand, and every goal would be celebrated by throwing a bicycle into the sea. Afterwards, everybody would realise that this was actually more fun than playing football on a windy platform in the middle of nowhere, and the first "cycle hurling" World Cup would be held in Esperantoland the following year.

Bjarne Riis would be the winner (minute 0:50)...

(a) Mark is clearly the Sepp Blatter of the imaginary football world
(b) why didn't Riis just get in one of those cars which helpfully stopped for him?

Another impressive performance from Vincenzo Nibali: this year the Tour de France is Italian sHa_shakeshout.gif

It will be a great emotion to hear the Italian anthem on Champs-Élysées 16 years after Marco Pantani!!!

Today there is the last effort before the Champs-Élysées parade. The German Tony Martin, in my opinion, is the best chronoman in the world at the moment, so he will probably win, but Nibali is a good specialist as well and considering how strong he is at the moment, ha can be one of the protagonists. He's declaring he wants to win the stage, but frankly it's very difficult. Let's see...

Mesdames et Messieurs, s'il vous plaît, un grand applaudissement pour Vincenzo Nibali, le vainqueur du Tour de France 2014 sHa_clap2.gif

In my opinion, this is the most prestigious success for the Italian sport since the 2006 World Cup!

Yes, and I add also the successes of Valentino Rossi in motorcycle, the ones of Federica Pellegrini in swimming or the Roland Garros won by Francesca Schiavone in 2010.
But Tour de France is Tour de France. Or perhaps my opinions are too conditioned by my love for cycling...
A propos of great cycling: Vuelta a España has started. This is my predicion for the final success:

1 Chris Froome; 2 Nairo Quintana; 3 Samuel Sánchez
