On 5th March, I will conduct a 'fun' experiment.  A World Cup of rankings (or better, a World League of rankings).  The idea was inspired by a comparison I saw on CTR's ranking page.

All online ranking systems will be compared against each other for their prediction of all the 5th March matches (63 matches in total).  Every ranking will be considered as a separate team, and all teams will play against each other once.  3 points will be given to the winner of each match, with 1 point for each team in the event of a draw.

Individual points within each match will be awarded as follows:

If BOTH rankings predict the same result (i.e. Team A wins), this match will be ignored.
If the actual result of the match is a draw, this match will also be ignored.
If one ranking predicts a win for Team A, and the other ranking predicts a win for Team B, then the ranking which matches the actual results gains a point.

So in summary - only matches which do not end in a draw (and have been predicted differently by the 2 rankings in question) will be considered.

I will post information on 6th March.  Meanwhile, I will list all participants and fixtures here: http://theroonba.com/rankingworldleague.htm

As I said, just a bit of fun, and probably not entirely scientific.

As my rankings are still under development, The Roon Ba will enter a 'B' team in the competition rather than not participate.  This will use the draft version of my rankings.

Each ranking will be judged based on the 4th March ranking (including the Iran v Kuwait match today).  For rankings which are updated less regularly, the latest ranking before 5th March will be taken.

There are 11 ranking systems altogether, and 1 filler team called "Random" - this is a computer-generated random ordered list of all countries.

Qns
(a) will random be the same order for all "matches" between rankings?
(b) can I enter my own predictions of the results (as the outcome of some implicit ranking in my head somewhere)?

(a) Random is the same order for all matches between rankings.
(b) Of course. I will put the matches here and anyone who wants to predict can do so. The only stipulation is that you can't predict a draw. All games must have a winner. To enter, simply put a 1 (home win) or 2 (away win) next to the match. This technique will mean individuals have an advantage, because they can take into account home advantage. For the ranking systems, home advantage is eliminated. It is simply a case of the higher ranked team always wins.

So, please, anybody who wants to enter and beat FIFA (or any of the other ranking systems).

Just leave a name for your 'ranking' and your nationality, and I will add you to the fixtures list and league table.

I will impose a deadline of 23:59 PM (UK time) on 4th March for entries.

New fixtures will be formulated after the final entry is received.  In the case of an odd number of teams being registered, a second random team will be entered.

Apologies, I added in Malawi-Zimbabwe after the copying of matches. You can add your prediction for this match as well on your next visit to the forum.  I've inserted it into your post to avoid other people copying the list without this match.

I think Ukraine-USA may ultimately be cancelled, but I'll leave it in for just now.

Former Portuguese captain João D. Pinto once famously said "predictions, only after the end of the match". But I might as well defy him and see how I'll do.

These 2 teams are now entered.

CTR, I forgot about the Aggregate Ranking. I might as well enter them with their official name. Technically, the "Wisdom of the Crowd" approach should be a good one. I expect they will figure near the top of the league.

Cubic Watermelon, I've slightly relocated Tonga. ;-)

No, it isn’t a shame there is no Belgian team in the league ... I think, at the moment Piet will be so excited … that in an ironic way his opinion about rankings was confirmed. What do I mean?

Roon Ba Rankings. 07/10/12, 18:37:04

In the first 22 games in 2014 this was the only ranking not a single ‘wrong winner’ was predicted! So, Piet could say, the best ranking systems are those which are not updated or published. smiley: wink
Who has so much reason to laugh, has no nerve to participate in such games.

Seriously, I think it would be interesting to see ‘the performance’ of the Roon Ba ranking 2012. Here the ‘predictions’ (home advantage is taken into account, of course). Maybe you call this ranking ‘Roon Ba A’.

Piet has a filter on his browser which doesn't allow him to see any page containing the string "ranking".  It's why he had to quit his job at an automatic envelope-labelling company, and before that, his previous job as a vintage car mechanic.

OK, I try to reply , but my English is not good enough to understand the jokes (about me.....I hope they are ironical....); I am not good in predictions and I do not understand the reason why we cannot predict a draw.....
